CSI is an all-volunteer non-profit, tax-exempt conservation, education, and scientific research organization. We are committed to the preservation and protection of whales, dolphins, porpoises, and the marine environment on a global basis. CSI began in 1974 as the Connecticut Cetacean Society. We have since grown into an international organization with volunteer representatives in 26 countries, and are represented at every major national and international forum concerning whales, dolphins, and porpoises. We are able to accomplish so much with a small budget because we are an all-volunteer organization with no overhead, and because many of our expenses are absorbed as contributions.

Some of our current activities include:

• Peaceful efforts to stop whaling by Japan, Norway, and U.S. Makah Indians.
• Representation at international conferences such as CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) and the International Whaling Commission. We also send knowledgeable representatives to scientific and environmental conferences, and special meetings concerning cetacean related issues such as research, education, whale watching, strandings, and public policy.
• Encouraging whale watching worldwide as an educational tool, and as an alternative to hunting and killing.
• Captivity issues, especially in Latin America and the U.S.
• Working to halt incidental or intentional killing of cetaceans in the fishing industry worldwide.
• Studying and publicizing the impact of pollution on marine organisms.
• Working to halt danger to cetaceans from acoustic sources, such as a major U.S. Navy sonar system, which are believed to harm large whales.
• CSI's "scientific research support program", which provides funds or equipment to an average of 15 research projects around the world each year. We are always looking for scientists with extraordinary talent and potential for the future (many in underdeveloped nations).
• CSI's educational efforts, which range from local programs to the Internet.
• Helping stranded whales and assisting with rehabilitation efforts.

We are proud of our international reputation for effectiveness. The United Nations Environment Programme named CSI to its "Global Roll of Honor for Environmental Achievement" in 1988. We often work with other environmental organizations toward our common goals.
